Loch Long Salmon
Simply Blue Aquaculture and Trimara Services have formed a joint venture to develop a low impact salmon farming company, Loch Long Salmon Ltd. Trimara’s founding partner Stewart Hawthorn is a highly experienced salmon farmer with over 30 years in the sector and together the two parties aim to bring a new type of salmon farming to Scotland using semi-closed salmon farming systems.
These systems are already operating in Norway and have been designed to capture and remove natural organic waste from the salmon. They also exclude sea lice which will eliminate the need for chemical treatments or the physical removal of lice so improving fish welfare and removing the risk to wild fish. Seals cannot see the salmon through the impermeable barrier and will not be aware of them so there will also be no need for any acoustic deterrence devices.
Water will be drawn into the farming enclosure from below where sea lice are active and mixed with oxygen as required to provide a perfect rearing environment for the best possible salmon welfare and growth. Waste will be captured and reduced before being used as a by-product, either as a fertiliser or for anaerobic digestion plant feedstock.
The first site at Beinn Reithe in Loch Long is being consented having received its Lease Option Agreement from Crown Estate Scotland and will be farmed using these new system. The site will be first of a kind project for Scotland creating local jobs in Argyll & Bute and demonstrating this pathway for the future of salmon farming in the natural ocean environment. Other sites have been identified around Scotland and Loch Long Salmon will be applying to Crown Estate Scotland for Lease Option Agreements for four additional locations.
